Tech Fund Representatives

Upper Year Co-Chair: Running Zhang

Running is a second-year MI student, concentrating in User Experience Design. He graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies degree specialized in digital media technologies. He has experience in the IT or communication departments of several organizations in his previous years. To some extent, he is also a geek, since he is always keen on researching and playing new technologies on his own. Hence, he has a solid knowledge base of the latest technologies.

He is always having a passion for exploring the relationships between technologies and human and the necessity of media technologies in studying. Therefore, as a Tech Fund Representative, he is willing to utilize his passion to meets students’ needs in studying information using various technologies, as well as make and maintain a tech fund that is functional and transparent. Feel free to ask him questions and giving him feedback and ideas.

Upper Year Co-Chair: Xinyi Yu


First Year Co-Chair: Usman Malik

Usman is a first-year Master of Information student who is concentrating in Library and Information Science in addition to Archives and Record Management. As both a Tech Fund and Faculty Council Representative, Usman is excited to address changing individual, technical and classroom needs in an online environment to help create the best possible learning experience in these uncertain times.

Prior to starting the MI program, Usman completed an Honors Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto, double majoring in Cognitive Science and English. Now, he works as a Graduate Student Library Assistant at the UofT Dentistry Library through the TALint program. Outside of school, Usman enjoys reading books, jogging, and playing videogames.

Tech Fund Representative, Upper-Year

There are two Upper Year MI Student Tech Fund Representatives (SY-STFR), both of whom sit on MISC and the MISC/MUSSA Tech Fund Committee. These positions must be held by upper year Master of Information students elected during the Spring election cycle. They must hold the position for a full year and attend and contribute to all MISC meetings and are each allotted one vote. The SY-STFR helps propose and track purchases made with the Student Tech Fund, while also reporting at MISC General Council meetings about purchases, and seeking approval from MISC on purchases exceeding $3,000. The SY-STFR will also attend Student Tech Fund committee meetings, which are comprised of MI and MMSt Tech Fund Representatives and may include faculty and IT supervisors. These meetings must be held once every 30 days during the Fall and Winter semesters. The SY-STFR will also hold one of the following Student Tech Fund committee positions: Chairperson; Treasurer; Secretary; Workshops, Events and Communications Coordinator; Referendum Coordinator.
