The Professional Development Committee is responsible for providing events and workshops that help students form professional skills and to feel career ready by the time they graduate.

They engage and liaise with students and faculty around career and professional development opportunities such as organizing job talks or career-related panels. Our biggest event is the annual Employer Showcase which is held every January. See below for a full list of our past and upcoming events.

Annual Clubs and Associations Showcase

Every September the student-run clubs and associations (and some outside clubs too) come together in the student lounge. Students are encouraged to come out learn the benefits of joining these groups that are integral to the iSchool community. This is the best time to sign up for e-mail lists, find out about events that will be held throughout the year, and join a cause!

Career Information Networking Event (Annual Employer Showcase)

January 17, 2018, 3PM-7PM in the Inforum
The Career Information Networking Event is your opportunity to meet professionals in the field! Employers from a variety of companies including hospitals, not for profits, government departments and ministries, media companies, educational institutions, consulting firms, and more will set up booths around the Inforum. Professional LinkedIn headshots will also be provided free of charge to students. Gather contacts, ask questions, and explore your career opportunities!

Code Across Toronto 2017

The Professional Development Committee in conjunction with MISC and the Faculty collaborated with Civic Tech Toronto to host CodeAcross Toronto, an annual hackathon celebrating Open Data Day to hack on civic challenges. iSchool students were able to attend for free to learn, network and contribute to civic challenges. Career Networking Group Concentration Panels As part of the Career Networking Group comprised of Faculty and students, the Professional Development Committee planned two well-attended panels with information professionals related to the Critical Information Policy Studies concentration. The first panel was held on Thursday March 2, 2017 with Denis Carr and Jessica Rayes from Open Data Toronto and the second panel on Tuesday March 14, 2017 with Katy Lalonde, Binh Lu and Tim Dafoe from the Ontario Public Service.

PD MISC Presents: iSchool Students Working - A Panel Event

Monday, September 23, 2013; 4-6pm - BL Rm 728
Join us for a Q&A Panel and hear about students' experiences working over the summer! Plus food! This is your chance to listen to senior iSchool students who will give you advice about work: how to find jobs, how they landed work over the summer, their internship and practicum experience, balancing work and school, and much more. All attendees will get a chance to ask questions and talk to the presenters afterwards.

Professional Preparation Strategies

Are you wondering what type of job you’ll get after graduation? Did you know that the iSchool Institute offers a Professional Preparation Strategies course for iSchool students every winter? Join course instructor Kim Silk as she gives a sneak preview of the course, including tools and tactics you’ll need to secure gainful employment as an information professional. Tea and cookies will be provided.

My Summer of Professional Experience iTea

Wednesday, September 20th, 2012; 5-6pm - BL Rm 728
This iTea features a panel of second year students who share their summer work experiences.This year's panel included:

  • Laurie Near (CIS path) - Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Information Management and Access Branch, Records Management Assistant
  • Daphne Horn (LIS path) - Mt. Sinai, Library Information Specialist
  • Heather Smith (ARM path) - Miss Margaret Robins Archives of Women's College Hospital, Archives Assistant
  • Justin Scherer (KMIM path) - Clever TV, Account Assistant
  • Danielle Megaffin (MMSt) - Royal Ontario Museum, Intern

Job finding tips from the panel included: Do the practicum courses! Don't underestimate the value of practical experience because you really need it to compliment your courses. Take advantage of the opportunities the iSchool offers to meet people. Network and meet professionals in the field as much as possible.
